THE TANKAH

The Torah section of the Hebrew scriptures is made up of
the five books of Moses, generally the first five books in
published editions of the Bible. To date the collection
contains ten Torah scrolls with a Holy Ark.The term "Torah"
is derived from the Hebrew verb, yarah, meaning "to point
out, to lay a foundation, to instruct." In many places the
word Torah could be translated "instruction" and consists
of more than 613 commandments. Some of the Torahs in
the display are dressed in a cloth covering or decorated
with a sterling silver breastplate (Ashkenazi). Other Torahs
in the display are in an ornamental sterling silver or wooden
case and decorated with a Torah crown (Sephardic).

In the Jewish canon the Neviim (prophets) section of the
Tanakh spans all the way from the book of Joshua (1400 BCE)
to the last of the prophets, Malachi (400 BCE). The Prophets
have two major subdivisions: Former Prophets (Rishonim)
and the Latter Prophets (Aharonim). The Rishonim contains
the narrative books, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings.
Each book is its own scroll with I & II Samuel written as one
scroll as well as I & II Kings. The Aharonim contains the
prophecies in the form of Biblical poetry. This division includes:
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the Twelve - Hosea, Joel, Amos,
Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah,
Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. (The twelve are all written on
one scroll.)
